Rudi Hiti

Hiti, Rudolf

Position : RW

04-11-1946 Jesenice, YUG (SLO)

Youth team / club formateur : HK Jesenice

Older brother of Gorazd Hiti.
Began playing competitive ice hockey in 1959 for HK Jesenice, where he was seen as a protegé.
Excellent playmaker and a good skater, even though he himself said that his skating was the major weakness of his game.
Indeed his legs were so powerful that he skated fast even with low-paced strides.
Sometimes criticized because of a too individualistic game.
Caught the interest of the Chicago Blackhawks who invited him to training camp in 1970. Unfortunately, in his first NHL exhibition game, he broke his jaw and never got another chance. Also offered a contract by Los Angeles Sharks (WHA) in 1972.
Represented his country in 17 IIHF World Championships and two Olympics. Named to the B-Pool World Championship All-Star Team four times. Also enjoyed a fine playing career in Italy. Won four Slovenian/Yugoslav national championships and was an Italian champion three times. Retired in 1986.
Coached the Slovenian national team from 1991 to 2000. Made a brief 7 game comeback in 2000. Scored 166 points (84+82) in 177 games for Yugoslavia.
Inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
