Older brother of Hermann Hinterstocker. Small and technical winger. Represented West Germany 99 times (30 goals).
Scored 780 (516+264) career points in 771 games. He scored a temporary Bundesliga record of 78 goals in 1978/79, benefitting from great passes from Craig Sarner.
Retired in 1990. Went on to coach. His two sons Benjamin and Martin jr also played in the DEL.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

780 points (516+264) en 771 matches de championnat d'Allemagne. Il a battu un record - qui a tenu un an - en inscrivant 78 buts en 1978/79 grâce aux passes de son coéquipier Craig Sarner.
Devenu entraîneur chez les jeunes et dans les ligues inférieures. Ses deux fils Benjamin et Martin junior sont eux aussi passés profesionnels en DEL.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
