Mark Hardy

Hardy, Mark Lea ("Harpo")

Position : D

01-02-1959 Samedan, SUI

The oldest of three children. Son of former Quebec senior league player Lea Hardy, who played in Great Britain before moving to Switzerland, where Mark was born. His mother was former British Olympic figure skater Barbara Wyatt, who finished seventh at Oslo in 1952.
Began skating at the age of two. At four he played his first hockey games in Montreal, in the Pincourt section. His hockey heroes growing up were Larry Robinson and Bobby Orr.
Ability to quickly start offensive rushes from his own zone. Good shot from the point.
Never tried to be fancy and kept it simple, making him quite effective in his own zone.
Known as a great practical joker during his playing days. Nicknamed “Harpo” by teammate Charlie Simmer for having a big afro at the time, looking like Harpo Marx.
Considered Al Secord and Mark Messier to be the toughest competitors he ever played against. Coached after his playing career that ended in 1998.
In May 2010 he was charged with fourth-degree sexual abuse of his then 21-year old daughter. Shortly thereafter he resigned from his NHL job and checked into the NHL Substance Abuse Program. The charge was eventually reduced to a misdemeanor and then eventually dropped. Got a second chance and coached in the ECHL.

Mark a commencé à patiner à 2 ans.
