Began his senior career playing for SC Bern in 1944.
He then played one season for HC Davos before shifting to EHC Basel.
There he spent the majority of his playing career between 1947-61.
Could also play as a forward, which he mainly did from 1955 up until his retirement.
He retired from Swiss hockey in 1961 and started a very successful sanitary firm, Emil Handschin AG.
He also played in South Africa for Tigers during the off season in 1955, as well as for the Transvaal in 1960 and Southern Suburbs 1964 and 1965.
Represented Switzerland 133 times.
