Began his senior career playing for SC Bern in 1944.
He then played one season for HC Davos before shifting to EHC Basel.
There he spent the majority of his playing career between 1947-61.
Could also play as a forward, which he mainly did from 1955 up until his retirement.
He retired from Swiss hockey in 1961 and started a very successful sanitary firm, Emil Handschin AG.
He also played in South Africa for Tigers during the off season in 1955, as well as for the Transvaal in 1960 and Southern Suburbs 1964 and 1965.
Represented Switzerland 133 times.

Il a commencé sa carrière senior avec le SC Berne en 1944.
Il a ensuite joué un an au HC Davos avant de passer au EHC Bâle de 1947 à 1961.
Il pouvait aussi jouer attaquant, ce qu'il a principalement fait de 1955 à sa retraite.
Il a ensuite créé en 1962 une entreprise très prospère de sanitaires, Emil Handschin AG.
Il a aussi joué en Afrique du Sud pour les Tigers durant l'intersaison 1955, tout comme pour le Transvaal en 1960 et les Southern Suburbs en 1964 et 1965.
