First began to skate as a six-year old, and shortly thereafter he played ice hockey. Began playing for SC Frankenhausen as a kid and won several junior titles with the club. Moved to Berlin in 1957 and played for ASK (Armeesportklub) Berlin. From 1960 he played for ASK Crimmitschau.
Made his debut for the national team on March 9, 1960. Represented East Germany 16 times. Had to retire as a 24-year old due to a serious injury during summer training.

Chausse les patins dès ses six ans et commence le hockey dans la foulée. S'inscrit, encore enfant, au SC Frankenhausen avec lequel il remporte plusieurs trophées juniors. Arrivé à Berlin à 1957, il est enrôlé par l'ASK (Armeesportklub) Berlin. Passe au ASK Crimmitschau en 1960.
Connaît la première de ses 16 capes avec la RDA le 9 mars 1960. Doit abréger sa carrière à 24 ans après une grave blessure contractée pendant la préparation estivale.
