Opportunistic player. Good penalty killer and stickhandler. Performed well in the playoffs.
Was recognizable on the ice in the NHL for wearing an old SpAps helmet that he had worn since he was 12 years old.
Had a reputation for having the poorest fashion sense in the NHL.
There’s a story how a burglar broke into his hotel room on a road trip while he played for Los Angeles, and stole everything that belonged to his roommate but left all of Goring's clothes hanging in the closet untouched.
Regarded as one of the first players to grow a playoff beard.
Four time Stanley Cup champion with New York Islanders.
Won the Lady Byng Trophy (NHLs Gentleman), Bill Masterton Trophy (Sportsmanship award) and Conn Smythe Trophy (Stanley Cup MVP).
Retired during the 1986/87 season.
Went on to work as a coach in the WHL, IHL, AHL, WCHL and NHL.
Also coached in Germany and was the assistant coach for the Canadian national team.
