Grew up admiring “Boom-Boom” Geoffrion and Jean Béliveau. Later on he tried to emulate Andy Bathgate who eventually became his teammate.
Good skater with a fine slap shot, and a strong wrist shot. Above average determination and effort on game nights.
Formed a high scoring line in New York with Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle, dubbed the “G-A-G line” (Goal A Game line).
His hockey career almost ended at the age of 19 when he stepped on a piece of debris on the ice and cracked his fourth vertebrae and was paralyzed for two months.
It was a potential career-ending injury. He was taken to the Mayo Clinic and had a spinal fusion. He didn't skate for eight months.
He was eventually troubled by back problems and had several surgeries. Played with a steel braced corset.
Very popular player among fans. Nicknamed “Blackie” (Noireau), “Rocky” and “Hot Rod”.
Considered the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviets to be his greatest sports moment.
Ranked Tim Horton and Leo Boivin as the toughest competitors he ever encountered. He also admired the fact that they were clean players.
Retired during the 1977/78 season. Coached briefly in the AHL.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. His number 7 has been retired by the New York Rangers.

Bon patineur avec un tir frappé fin et un fort tir du poignet. Détermination supérieure à la moyenne et beaucoup d’efforts les soirs de match.

Sa carrière de hockeyeur a failli prendre fin à 19 ans lorsqu'il marche sur un débris sur la glace et se casse la quatrième vertèbre, restant paralysé 2 mois.
Il fut transporté à la clinique Mayo et eu une greffe de moelle épinière. Il n’a pas joué pendant 8 mois.
Il est resté perturbé par des problèmes au dos et a eu quelques opérations. Jouait avec un corset en métal.
Très populaire chez les fans. Surnommé "Noireau", "Rocky" et "Hot Rod".
Considère la série du siècle de 1972 contre l’Union Soviétique comme l’un de ses grands moments.
Nomme Tim Horton et Leo Boivin comme ses adversaires les plus acharnés. Il appréciait le fait qu’ils étaient des joueurs propres.
S’est retiré pendant la saison 1977/78. A entraîné brièvement en AHL.
Introduit au Temple de la renommée. Son numéro 7 a été retiré par les New York Rangers.
