He attended the University of Manitoba, playing there until his graduation in 1922.
He continued to play in Winnipeg for the rest of his career.
Won the 1931 World Ice Hockey Championships, and became the first Canadian Olympic hockey player to had previously won a World Championship medal when he was selected to represent Canada at the 1932 Winter Games. Eventually retired after the 1934/35 season.
His wife was a proud Icelandic-Canadian, and she like the rest of the Garbutt family loved to play and watch ice hockey in their younger days.
He worked 37 years for National Grain Co., Ltd.
Passed away at Winnipeg General Hospital and is buried at Brookside Cemetery.

Il étudie et joue à l’Université du Manitoba, jusqu’à son diplôme en 1922.
Il continue à jouer à Winnipeg pour le reste de sa carrière.
Gagne le Championnat du monde 1931 et devient le premier joueur olympique canadien à avoir d’abord gagné un championnat du monde quand il est sélectionné pour les JO de 1932.
Il prend sa retraite après la saison 1934/35.
Sa femme était une fière islando-canadienne, et comme toute sa famille, elle adorait regarder et jouer au hockey.
Il a travaillé 37 ans pour National Grain Co.
Décédé à l’hôpital central de Winnipeg et enterré au cimetière de Brookside.
