Hard-working two-way forward who wasn't very skilled but played a physical game despite his small size (172 cm).
Worked with his brother Peter in the butchery owned by his father in Zeltweg, while playing hockey in second division.
When EHC Lustenau got promoted into the top division in 1982, the brothers got a call to try their luck at elite level.
Lustenau went down again one year later. Peter went back home and became a butcher ; Fritz signed for champion club Feldkirch.
He played 20 seasons for VEU Feldkirch and scored 411 points (158+213) in 783 games.
He won the Austrian championship seven times and won the Alpenliga four times.
Also captained Feldkirch to the European Hockey League in 1998.
Four thousand fans came to the farewell game organized for him.
After his retirement in 2003, he worked as a school caretaker.

Attaquant travailleur et défensif, pas très talentueux mais au jeu physique en dépit de sa petite taille (1m72).
Il travaillait avec son frère Peter dans la boucherie de son père à Zeltweg, tout en jouant en deuxième division.
Quand l'EHC Lustenau est monté en première division en 1982, il a proposé aux frères Ganster de tenter leur chance au plus haut niveau.
Lustenau redescendit un an plus tard. Peter rentra à la maison pour redevenir boucher ; Fritz signa avec le champion Feldkirch.
Il joua alors 20 saisons pour le VEU Feldkirch et y marqua 411 points (158+213) en 783 matches.
Sept fois champion d'Autriche, quatre fois vainqueur de l'Alpenliga.
Il était le capitaine de Feldkirch lors de la victoire historique en Ligue Européenne en 1998.
Quatre mille spectateurs vinrent assister au jubilé organisé en son honneur à sa retraite en 2003.
Il chercha alors un emploi auprès de la commune de Feldkirch et devint responsable des écoles (quatre écoles primaires et trois maternelles).
