Son of Hans Frenzel. Defenseman with great skating abilities. Good puck mover with a booming slapshot. For many years the quarterback on powerplays, where he was used extensively.
Started with Dynamo main team at 17. He played two years with jersey #3, before he could use his father's number (5) which was used by Petr Prusa.
In 1983 the Edmonton Oilers offered the East Germans a lot of money to get Frenzel but the authorities declined. He wasn't told them but got offered an Oilers jersey with his name later.
Won twelve league titles with SC Dynamo Berlin. Scored 406 points in 415 games. Represented East Germany 296 times. Voted to the All-Star Team at the 1979 Pool B World Championships.
When the inner German border opened in November 1989, Frenzel was the first East German player to sign with a West German club (Ratingen), the second being Bögelsack ; he was officially licensed as a foreign player at that time. Because he had just retired a few months earlier, he could sign there without any administrative hurdle from East German sport authorities.
Played 165 games (43+126) in four seasons with Ratingen and 142 games (43+124) in three seasons as Wilhelmshaven capitain. Never played with Nordhorn contrary to what is written in some databases.
Retired in 1996 and went on to coach various hockey teams, including his own son Matthias (a junior national team player for Germany) in Selb and Hamburg.
Quit hockey when he was fired from Hannover in 2001/02. Made a brief comeback on ice in Sachsenliga (fifth division) in 2003 with new club EHC Leipziger Eislöwen.
Then he opened a shoe store in Dresden. He can speak German, French, English and Russian to his customers.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame. His number 5 has been retired by the Eisbären (former Dynamo) Berlin.

Fils de Hans Frenzel. Défenseur offensif au patinage rapide, bon relanceur. Son slap puissant était très utilisé en supériorité numérique.
Il a débuté dans l'équipe première du Dynamo à 17 ans. Il a joué deux ans avec le maillot n°3, avant que le numéro de son père (5) - qui était utilisé par Petr Prusa - ne devienne disponible.
Les Edmonton Oilers offrirent beaucoup d'argent au gouvernement est-allemand pour l'enrôler en 1983 mais n'obtinrent jamais l'accord des autorités. Il ne fut pas mis au courant sur le moment mais reçut ultérieurement un maillot des Oilers à son nom.
Douze fois vainqueur du championnat d'Allemagne de l'Est à deux clubs. 406 points en 415 matches, 296 sélections internationales. Élu dans l'équipe-type des Mondiaux B 1979 et 1982.
Lorsque la frontière entre les deux Allemagnes s'ouvrit en novembre 1989, Dieter Frenzel fut le premier hockeyeur est-allemand à signer dans un club de l'ouest (Ratingen), où il faisait encore office de joueur étranger [le second fut Bögelsack]. Comme il venait de raccrocher les patins quelques mois plus tôt, il pouvait en effet librement signer sans contrainte des autorités sportives est-allemandes.
Il a joué 165 parties (43+126) en quatre saisons à Ratingen et 142 parties (43+124) en trois saisons comme capitaine de Wilhelmshaven. Il n'a jamais joué à Nordhorn contrairement à ce qui figure dans certaines bases de données.
Retraité pour de bon à 41 ans pour un bref parcours d'entraîneur de six ans, au cours duquel il lance en senior son fils Matthias (international junior allemand) à Selb puis à Hambourg.
Quitte le hockey après son renvoi de Hanovre pour "difficultés de communication" en 2001/02. Il a fait un bref retour sur la glace en Sachsenliga - cinquième division - en 2003 avec le nouveau club des EHC Leipziger Eislöwen.
Il ouvre alors le magasin de chaussures Grazie dans la galerie marchande Altmarkt au centre de Dresde. Il peut parler allemand, français, anglais et russe à ses clients.
En 2020 il s'est installé à Pirna, près de Dresde, pour sa retraite.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand. Son maillot n°5 est retiré par les Eisbären (ex-Dynamo) de Berlin.
