His first big tournament was the 1952 Pioniermeisterschaft - East-German child tournament - in Schierke.
Dry humored player who wore the colors of SG Dynamo Weißwasser between 1954 and 1968. Between 1959 and 1965 he won seven straight league titles.
First game with national team in December 1958 in Oslo on a line with Hans Frenzel and Joachim Ziesche. Represented East Germany 116 times.
After his playing career, he coached SG Dynamo Weißwasser to four straight league titles (1969-72).
In 1972, when East German officials had ceased funding ice hockey, he was ordered to teach speed skating.
Became one of the greatest speedskating coaches in German history. His adepts won nine Olympic gold medals and a further nine medals. They won 21 world championships.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame. Survived a heart attack in 2009.

Son premier tournoi important fut le Pioniermeisterschaft - le championnat de RDA pour enfants - à pas encore 12 ans en 1952 à Schierke.
Équipier pince-sans-rire qui défendit le SG Dynamo Weißwasser pendant quinze saisons, entre 1954 et 1968. Champion sept fois consécutivement entre 1959 et 1965.
Première sélection internationale en décembre 1958 à Oslo sur une ligne avec Hans Frenzel et Joachim Ziesche. 116 sélections pour l'équipe d'Allemagne de l'Est.
À ses titres en tant que joueur, il ajouta quatre championnats en tant qu'entraîneur du même Dynamo Weißwasser (de 1969 à 1972).
Comme les autorités avaient cessé de financer le hockey, on lui ordonna de se reconvertir en entraîneur de patinage de vitesse.
Dans cette spécialité, il reste un des meilleurs entraîneurs de l'histoire allemande, avant ou après la chute du Mur. Ses poulains ont ramassé, en tout, 9 titres olympiques et 21 titres mondiaux.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand. Franke a subi une attaque cardiaque en 2009.
