Right-shooting defenceman who moves the puck well. Decent skater. Under average frame for a blueliner (181 cm, 87 kg).
He started ice hockey at six because he followed his friends. His family had no ice hockey background at all.
His father grew up in England. His mother grew up in Singapore (her grandparents came from China) and came to Canada for her studies.
Jason grew up in Richmond, a city just south of Vancouver where the majority of population has Chinese heritage like him.
After a strong junior career in Spokane he had a short pro stint (AHL and ECHL) in the beginning of 2015/16 season but was recruited into University of Alberta for the second semester. USports defenceman of the year in 2018 and 2019 and national champion 2018.
He finished his diploma with distance courses because he went to the KHL Kunlun Red Star so that he could play for China olympic team.
His name was spelled as Liu Jie during 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.

Il a commencé le hockey sur glace à six ans pour suivre ses amis dans un sport inconnu de ses parents.
Son père a grandi en Angleterre. Sa mère a grandi à Singapour (de grands-parents chinois) et est arrivée au Canada pour ses études.
Jason a grandi à Richmond, banlieue sud de Vancouver où la majorité de la population est d'origine chinoise tout comme lui.
Après une belle carrière junior à Spokane il est brièvement passé pro (AHL et ECHL) au début de la saison 2015/16 mais a été recruté par l'Université de l'Alberta pour le second semestre. Défenseur de l'année du circuit universitaire canadien en 2018 et 2019 et champion national 2018.
Il a fini son diplôme de commerce à distance car il est parti au Kunlun Red Star en KHL pour pouvoir représenter la Chine aux Jeux olympiques de Pékin. Son nom y fut sinisé en Liu Jie.
