Began to play hockey at the age of five when he followed his three-year older brother Roger to training camp. Very good all-around player who was riddled by injuries throughout his playing career. Excellent playmaker with great on-ice vision and fine technical skills. Could play a strong physical game and was responsible defensively.
A stamp from Swedish post immortalized his one-handed winning penalty shot during 1994 Olympic final. He borrowed that play from his youth idol Kent Nilsson.
Was voted as the best forward at the 1998 World Championships and made the All-Star team in 1998 and 2003. Carried the Swedish flag at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Announced his retirement on February 14, 2011, after having attempted a comeback in the NHL that lasted for two games.

Découvre le hockey à cinq ans dans le sillage de son frère Roger, trois ans son aîné, qu'il accompagne à un entraînement. La révélation est fulgurante : Peter deviendra un joueur multitalents, passeur, créateur, technicien de pointe à la lecture du jeu instantanée, fort physiquement et responsable défensivement. Malheureusement, sa carrière sera ponctuée d'innombrables blessures.
Sera malgré cela meilleur attaquant du Mondial 1998 et élu dans l'équipe-type la même année, ainsi qu'en 2003. Eut même l'honneur d'être porte-drapeau de la délégation suédoise aux JO 2010 de Vancouver.
Surtout, un timbre-poste suédois a immortalisé son mémorable pénalty gagnant de la finale olympique 1994. Il imitait là un geste de son idole de jeunesse Kent Nilsson.
Annonça sa retraite définitive le 14 février 2011 après une énième tentative de retour en NHL, qui ne dura que deux matches.
