Played street hockey from 5 to 13 and started ice hockey at 8.
USHL champion and playoff best scorer wih the Sioux Falls Stampede in 2015. Conference final tournament MVP in his freshman year in the NCAA with St Cloud State (2016).
Suffered from fatigue in September 2017 and spent three days in the hospital. He was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and had to adopt a gluten-free diet.
Good hands but not an outstanding talent. He became stronger on skates and tenacious in puck battles to make his way to the NHL as a checking-line workhorse and even as a pest.
Wore number 19 like his youth idol Joe Sakic before switching to #21 in the AHL and #23 in the NHL.
He insists on the name Mikey, used by his mother - a cleaning company manager who became a yoga teacher - to call him.
His twin sister Anastasia wanted to become a gymnast before a broken elbow ended her dream.

Il a joué au street-hockey de 5 à 13 ans et a commencé le hockey sur glace à 8 ans.
Meilleur marqueur en play-offs des Sioux Falls Stampede, champions 2015 d'USHL, la meilleure ligue junior des États-Unis. MVP du tournoi final de conférence à sa première année d'université avec St Cloud State en 2016.
Hospitalisé trois jours en septembre 2017 pour une fatigue inexpliquée, il est diagnostiqué de la maladie de Crohn et adopte alors un régime sans gluten.
Doté de bonnes mains mais pas d'un talent exceptionnel, il a appris à solidifier ses appuis, à devenir accrocheur dans les duels et à être dur à jouer dans les coins pour percer sur le tard en NHL.
Il portait le numéro 19 en hommage à Joe Sakic, son idole de jeunesse, avant de passer au n°21 en AHL et au n°23 en NHL.
Il tient à être appelé Mikey comme l'appelle sa mère, une dirigeante de société de nettoyage devenue prof de yoga.
Sa sœur jumelle Anastasia voulait devenir gymnaste avant qu'une fracture ne coude ne mette un terme à ce rêve.
