As a little kid his father encouraged him to play ice hockey.
His father himself had played hockey and was on the committee for Brussels IHC.
The father always accompanied the young André to the rink, helping him with his equipment and giving him good advice.
He began playing senior ice hockey in 1936. He played several years below the highest division.
Developed to a good stickhandler over the years.
Described as a moaner and grumbler (in a positive way), hence his nickname, “Rouspéteur” (The Grumbler). According to teammates he had a heart of gold.

Quand il était enfant, son père l'a encouragé à jouer au hockey sur glace.
Son père lui-même avait joué au hockey et faisait partie du comité du Brussels IHC.
Son père accompagnait toujours le jeune André à la patinoire, l'aidant avec son matériel et lui donnant de bons conseils.
Il a commencé le hockey au niveau senior en 1936. Il a joué plusieurs années en division inférieure.
Il a développé une bonne technique de crosse au fil des ans.
Son surnom "Rouspéteur" lui a été affublé pour son côté râleur, mais de manière positive. Selon ses coéquipiers il avait un cœur d'or.
