His father was a native of Albany, NY, and his mother was from London, England.
He attended Philipps Andover and played hockey there before coming to Boston University where he played for three years (1927-30), scoring 7 points (6+1) in 25 games.
Elliott went on to work as a sales manager of his father in law’s hospital equipment firm.
On February 1, 1954 his wife filed for divorce, claiming he had physically abused her for several years, punching her and acting irrationally on many occasions.
She had moved out in August 1953 and was getting $ 500 a month from him, half of his salary.
She also wanted custody of their two teenage children.
Eleven days later Bob Elliott committed suicide at his office by swallowing a cyanide pill.
He had been depressed for several years according to a medical examiner, and said that the condition was partly because he had been hit over his head with a hockey stick as a player.

Elliott a ensuite travaillé comme commercial dans l'entreprise de matériel hospitalier de son beau-père.
Le 1er février 1954 sa femme a demandé le divorce, expliquant qu'il l'avait battue pendant des années et qu'il avait souvent un comportement irrationnel.
Elle avait quitté la maison en août 1953 et recevait 500 dollars par mois de sa part, la moitié de son salaire.
Elle voulait aussi la garde de leurs deux enfants alors adolescents.
Onze jours plus tard Bob Elliott s'est suicidé à son bureau en avalant une pilule de cyanure.
Il souffrait de dépression depuis des années selon un médecin légiste, et disait que sa condition était partiellement due à un coup de crosse reçu sur la tête quand il était hockeyeur.
