His father had worked as a waiter in France for many years and his brother died at the age of 17. Started playing hockey at the age of eight at Munický Rybnik in Hluboka.
When he was fourteen he started playing for Motor České Budějovice, a club he played for 16 seasons. Positionally sound defenseman with excellent physique.
Somewhat of an „old school“ defenseman. Always worked hard both on and off the ice. He wasn’t flashy but made few mistakes. Very hard to get by on one-on-one situations.
He played physical and delivered clean bodychecks. Scored more than 600 points in over 1000 career games. Represented Czechoslovakia 228 times (14 goals).
Often paired with Milan Chalupa. Played three solid seasons with Philadelphia Flyers in the mid-1980s. Retired in 1989.
Became a hotel and restaurant owner. This sociable and funny person died of throat cancer at the age of 56. Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.
In later years it was revealed that he worked as a confidant for StB, the plainclothes secret (political) police. They served as an intelligence and counter-intelligence agency. His cover name was “Čtverák”.

Son père a travaillé comme serveur en France pendant des années et son frère est mort à 17 ans. Il a commencé le hockey à 8 ans sur le lac Munický Rybnik à Hluboka.
À 14 ans, il a commencé à jouer pour le Motor České Budějovice, un club pour lequel il jouera 16 saisons. Défenseur au positionnement sûr avec un excellent physique.
Défenseur "vieille école". Travaillait toujours dur, sur et en dehors de la glace. Il n'était pas spectaculaire, mais commettait peu d'erreurs. Très difficile à passer en 1 contre 1.
Il jouait physique et infligeait des mises en échec propres. Plus de 600 points marqués en plus de 1000 matchs en carrière. 228 sélections avec la Tchécoslovaquie (14 buts).
Souvent apparié avec Milan Chalupa. Retraité en 1989.
Il a joué trois saisons solides avec les Philadelphia Flyers de 1982 à 1985 : 11 buts et 75 assists (84 points) en 193 parties de saison régulière en NHL.
Devenu propriétaire d'un hôtel-restaurant. Cet homme sociable et amusant est mort d'un cancer de la gorge à 56 ans. Intronisé au Temple de la renommée du hockey tchèque.
Il fut révélé après sa mort qu'il travaillait comme informateur pour StB, la police politique secrète qui servait d'agence d'espionnage. Son nom de code était "Čtverák".
