Excellent two sport star. As an ice hockey player he was a fair skater with a hard shot.
Good two-way player who always took defensive responsibilities.
Had very good stick technique. Was put on Boston Bruins negotiations list in 1949.
Authorities tried to convince him to participate at the 1949 World Championships, but he declined, already having plans on defecting. He eventually did on July 11,1949.
Was also an excellent tennis player (left-handed), ranked among the best in the world for a number of years. Won the French Open in 1951 and 1952, as well as Wimbledon in 1954.
He competed at Wimbledon under four different national identities (Czechoslovakia, Bohemia & Moravia, Egypt and Great Britain). Married an English tennis player (Rita Jarvis).
Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Czech and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Star dans deux sports. En tant que hockeyeur il était un bon patineur avec un tir puissant, qui prenait toujours ses responsabilités défensives.
Très bonne technique de crosse. Il a été placé sur la liste des négociations des Boston Bruins en 1949.
Les autorités tchécoslovaques ont essayé de le convaincre de participer aux Championnats du monde 1949, mais il a décliné car il planifiait déjà son exil. Il est finalement parti le 11 juillet 1949.
Il était aussi un excellent joueur de tennis (gaucher), classé dans les meilleurs mondiaux. Il a remporté Roland-Garros en 1951 et 1952, ainsi que Wimbledon en 1954.
Il a participé à Wimbledon sous quatre identités nationales différentes (Tchécoslovaquie, Bohême & Moravie, Égypte et Grande-Bretagne). Il a épousé une joueuse de tennis anglaise (Rita Jarvis).
Intronisé dans le Hall of Fame du tennis international et dans les Halls of Fame du hockey tchèque et de l'IIHF.
