Drafted in the NHL by Toronto Maple Leafs in 1971, he chose to play in the rival league WHA which paid better salaries.
Scored 114 points (23+91) in 323 WHA regular season games from 1972 to 1977.
His original plan was to play another year of hockey in Salzburg before going to study in München to become a lawyer.
Instead he had a nine-year long hockey career in Austria. In Salzburg he quickly learnt to speak German and met his future wife Elke.
Offensive defenceman who logged a huge ice time in Austria, especially in powerplay.
He told Der Standard he became a better hockey player in Austria because of summer training, while he "mainly went fishing in Canada".
Brought his boat from Canada to Adriatic Sea in 1978 and still liked fishing. Got Austrian citizenship in September 1978 but had to play one more season as a foreigner, though he played in Austrian national team.
In Villach he lived in the farthest house in the mountain, without any phone.
Voted to the All-Star Team and selected as the best defenseman at the 1979 and 1985 Pool B World Championships. Also an All-Star at the 1981 Pool C World Championships.
Scored 597 (224+373) career points in 296 Austrian league games. Retired in the middle of 1985/86 season because of a knee injury.
A friend offered him to work in his investment company in Barbados. He lived there until 1995 and was even named Austria honorary consul on the island.
He worked four more years for the same company in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before retiring for good in 1999 at only 48. His two sons (born 1981 and 1982) were adults soon.
So Cunningham bought a bigger boat, a 17-meter yacht named Gandalf, and travelled all the seas with his wife. Spent most of his time around New Zealand.

114 points (23+91) inscrits en 323 matches de saison régulière de WHA de 1972 à 1977.
Son plan à l'origine était de jouer encore au hockey pendant un an à Salzbourg avant d'aller étudier à Munich pour devenir avocat.
Au lieu de ça il resta neuf ans en Autriche. À Salzbourg, il apprit rapidement à parler allemand et rencontra sa future femme Elke.
Défenseur offensif, redoutable en jeu de puissance, qui cumulait un temps de glace très conséquent (souvent plus de 30 minutes) en Autriche.
Il a expliqué à Der Standard qu'il est devenu un meilleur joueur en Autriche du fait de l'entraînement estival alors qu'il passait "principalement l'été à pêcher au Canada".
Pour autant il aimait toujours la pêche et en 1978 il traversa l'Atlantique avec son bateau pour l'amarrer sur les côtes adriatiques. Il prit la nationalité autrichienne en septembre 1978 mais dut jouer encore une saison comme étranger, alors qu'il jouait en équipe d'Autriche.
À Villach il vivait dans la maison la plus lointaine dans la montagne, sans téléphone.
Élu dans l'équipe-type et meilleur défenseur des Mondiaux B 1979 et 1985. Également dans l'équipe-type des Mondiaux C 1981.
597 (224+373) points marqués en 296 matches de Bundesliga autrichienne. Une blessure au genou gauche précipita sa retraite au milieu de la saison 1985/86.
Un ami lui offrit en effet de travailler dans sa société d'investissement à la Barbade, un paradis fiscal. Il y vécut jusqu'en 1995 et fut même nommé consul honoraire de l'Autriche sur l'île.
Il travailla quatre années supplémentaire dans la nouvelle filiale de l'entreprise à Kuala Lumpur (Malaisie) avant de prendre sa retraite en 1999 à seulement 48 ans, au moment où ses deux fils (nés en 1981 et 1982) devenaient adultes.
Cunningham acheta alors un bateau plus grand, un yacht de 17 mètres qu'il baptisa Gandalf, et voyagea sur toutes les mers du monde avec sa femme. Son escale privilégiée est la Nouvelle-Zélande.
