Born and raised in Pardubice just like legendary goalie Dominik Hasek. Represented Czechoslovakia at the 1968 and 1969 European Junior Championships, and was chosen as the best goaltender in both tournaments (worth noting is that Vladislav Tretiak also played in both).
In the early 1970s he won three league championships in Czechoslovakia. During a vacation to Yugoslavia in August 1979, he and his wife and two children defected to Canada. There he became the first goaltender from the Iron Curtain to play in the NHL. He also became the first European born and trained goaltender to earn the No.1 goalie spot.
Set an NHL record for most saves in an NHL playoff debut with 61 saves (since broken) on April 8, 1980. Spent his last ten years playing in Germany and retired in 1993.
His number 1 has been retired by EHC Freiburg where he spent eight years.
Became a successful player agent after his playing career.

Natif de Pardubice, comme le légendaire Dominik Hasek. Fut élu deux fois de suite, en 1968 et 1969, meilleur gardien du championnat d'Europe juniors, devant Vladislav Tretiak qui gardait les buts des jeunes soviétiques.
Sur ces références, il remporta trois titres de champion tchécoslovaque avec Pardubice (1970, 1971 et 1973). Puis à 29 ans, en vacances en Yougoslavie, il fit défection.
On le retrouve au Canada où il devient le premier gardien originaire d'un pays du rideau de fer à évoluer en NHL. Après un an d'apprentissage, il est le premier gardien formé en Europe à s'y voir confier un poste de titulaire.
Un temps détenteur du record, réalisé le 8 avril 1980, du plus grand nombre d'arrêts (61) réalisés par un gardien pour son tout premier match en playoffs NHL. Ne resta pas très longtemps en Amérique du Nord. Il termina sa carrière en 1993 après 10 ans en Allemagne.
Gardien qui défendait sa cage avec caractère et prenait beaucoup de pénalités. Devenu un agent de joueurs réputé.
Son numéro 1 a été retiré par le club de Fribourg-en-Brisgau où il a passé ses huit dernières saisons.
Totaux NHL : 69 parties de saison régulière avec 90,8% d'arrêts et 3,97 buts encaissés par match.
