He was baptized on June 1, 1881. Sydney Cox was the younger brother of Bevan and one of four brothers who played ice hockey, the others being Bevan (born 1877), Percy S. (b.1886) and Horace P. (b.1891). His father Horace (Aubrey) Cox managed the business producing The Field for 50 years.
Sydney’s great uncle, Edward William Cox, was a successful publisher who left an estate worth £400.000 when he died in 1879, which is around $60 million in today's rate. The father, Horace Aubrey, only left £89.000 (around $4,5 million) when he died in 1918.
Sydney Cox entered Harrow in 1895 and left in 1897. In 1901 he studied at Colonial College, Hollesley, Suffolk. Eventually moved to Newfoundland where he went on farming and owned a sporting hotel named "The Bungalow" at Grand Lake, Nfld.

Jeune frère de Bevan au sein d'une fratrie de quatre hockeyeurs dont Bevan, donc, puis Percy S. (né en 1886) et Horace P. (né en 1891). Leur père, Horace Aubrey Cox, dirigea l'entreprise éditrice du journal The Field pendant un demi-siècle.
Le grand oncle de Sydney et de ses frères, un certain Edward William Cox, fut un éditeur de renom qui laissa à sa mort en 1879 un patrimoine de 400 000 livres sterling, soit 60 millions de dollars modernes. En 1918, à la mort d'Horace Aubrey, il ne restait que 89 000 de ces livres sterling.
Sydney Cox étudia à Harrow entre 1895 et 1897 puis au Colonial College de Hollesley, dans le Suffolk au sud-est de l'Angleterre, en 1901. Déménagea au Canada dans l'État de Terre-Neuve où il se fit fermier et propriétaire/exploitant d'un hôtel pour touristes sportifs.
