Was born in Connecticut, USA. His father was born in Liverpool and his mother was born in South Beach, just like Ralph. As a child, he moved with his family to Cerro de Pasco in central Peru, where his father was a mining engineer and the superintendent for the Cerro de Pasco Mining Co. as a partner in the firm of Alexander Hill, Stewart & Co. of Liverpool. He was a manager of the large gold mines owned by that firm in British Columbia and Australia.
Ralph's grandfather George H. Bladworth lived in New York and was a successful businessman.
Young Ralph first visited England (London) during the summer of 1913, staying there a few months before going back to Peru. Eventually came to England in 1932 when his father settled there after previously having been in Spain. Served in WWII in the Intelligence Corps.

Ce grand voyageur est né dans le Connecticut, dans la même ville natale que sa mère. Son père venait en revanche de Liverpool. À même pas cinq ans, Ralph s'installa avec sa famille au Pérou où son père ingénieur fut chargé de l'intendance d'une mine pour le compte de la Cerro de Pasco Mining Co.. Il était associé d'Alexander Hill, Stewart & Co., une firme de Liverpool dont il dirigeait les grandes mines d'or en Colombie-Britannique et en Australie.
Le grand-père maternel de Ralph, George H. Bladworth, fut un réputé homme d'affaires new yorkais.
Le jeune Ralph eut un premier contact très précoce avec l'Angleterre de ses aïeux quand il y fit un séjour à quatre ans, à l'été 1913. Il s'installera définitivement sur l'île en 1932 après un détour par l'Espagne. Intégré aux services de renseignement britanniques pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
