His father was from Minnesota and his mother from North Dakota. Captain for USA 1956.
In the 1950s, he formed one of the most dangerous lines in university hockey with John Mayasich and Richard Dougherty. Earned a college degree in business administration.
Retired in the early 1960s. Later became a health administrator at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and coached children’s hockey teams in Rochester, including some for kids with disabilities.

Capitaine de l'équipe des États-Unis aux Jeux olympiques 1956 de Cortina d'Ampezzo, Gene Campbell avait un père originaire du Minnesota et une mère du Dakota du Nord, deux états aux rudes hivers.
Dans les années 1950, la ligne qu'il formait avec John Mayasich et Richard Dougherty terrorisait le hockey universitaire. Diplômé en administration des entreprises.
Arrêta de jouer au début des années soixante pour devenir cadre de la Mayo Clinic à Rochester, Minnesota, ville où il s'occupait de hockey mineur, notamment auprès d'enfants handicapés.
