Born in Prenzlau but moved with his family to Weißwasser when he was a kid.
Began playing hockey in Weißwasser as a 7 year old. Mentored by Klaus Hirche.
When he was ten, his father took a job in Potsdam, and Hirche contacted Dynamo Berlin to make sure the young talent could go on playing hockey.
Very talented goaltender who made his big league debut as a 16-year old.
Represented East Germany 125 times and Germany 12 times.
First retired in 1997 but made brief comebacks that ended in 2001 and 2004.
He opened a guest house with his wife Kerstin in Berlin-Weißensee borough.
He also coached part-time with OSC Berlin women team, then as Eisbären junior team assistant coach.
In 2020 the Eisbären dismissed him because he wanted a full-time assistant coach. He said he wasn't asked he if he could work full time.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Né à Prenzlau, il a déménagé à Weißwasser enfant et y a commencé le hockey à 7 ans, encadré par Klaus Hirche.
Alors qu'il avait 10 ans, son père a pris un travail à Potsdam. Hirche ne voulait pas que ce talent soit perdu et a contacté le Dynamo Berlin.
Il a intégré l'internat du Dynamo Berlin à 12 ans et a fait ses débuts en équipe première à l'âge de 16 ans.
Gardien au style acrobatique, sélectionné 125 fois avec l'Allemagne de l'Est et 12 fois avec l'Allemagne réunifiée.
Il a pris sa retraite une première fois en 1997 mais il a fait des brefs retours qui ont pris fin en 2001 puis 2004.
Il a ouvert une pension avec sa femme Kerstin dans le quartier de Berlin-Weißensee.
En parallèle il travaillait à temps partiel comme entraîneur des féminines de l'OSC Berlin, puis adjoint des juniors des Eisbären.
En 2020 les Eisbären le remercièrent parce qu'ils voulaient un assistant coach à temps plein. Il expliqua que personne ne lui avait demandé sa disponibilité et se montra critique de l'évolution du club.
Intronisé au Hockey Hall of Fame.
