Good overall athlete who was also good at baseball and football.
A great defenseman, known in some circles as the ”Massachusetts Mauler” for his bruising physical play. Offensively gifted and was often seen dashing up the ice in spectacular solo rushes with the puck glued to his stick.
Always popular with the fans for his crowdpleasing playing style.
His senior career began in Paris, France where he spent five productive seasons (1931-36).
In Europe he was often refered to as “Besson” without the "e". He actually had Italian roots and his name ended in a vowel. His mother tongue, besides English, was Piemontese.
Played professional hockey in USA until moving back to Europe, hanging up his skates in 1952. Coached Italy at the 1951 World Championships. Passed away at the home of his daughter in California.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. His brother Amo - who joined him one year in Paris in 1932 when he was 16 - was inducted too. Amo coached Michigan State University during 28 years and was awarded as NCAA best coach in 1966 when he led his team to the national title.

Excellent défenseur, surnommé par certains le ”Massachusetts Mauler” ("Le malmeneur du Massachusetts") pour son jeu physique qui laissait des traces. Doué offensivement, réputé pour ses remontées de la glace en solitaire avec le puck collé à sa palette.
Toujours populaire chez les fans pour son style de jeu qui plaisait au public.
Sa carrière en sénior débuta à Paris, où il passa cinq saisons productives (1931-36).
En Europe et surtout en France, on l'appelait "Besson" sans le "e". Il était en fait d'origine italienne et son nom finissait par une voyelle. Sa langue maternelle - outre l'anglais - était le piémontais.
Il a joué au hockey professionel aux États-Unis avant de repartir en Europe et de raccrocher ses patins en 1952. Il était l'entraîneur de l'Italie lors des Championnats du Monde de 1951.
Intronisé au US Hockey Hall of Fame. Son frère Amo Bessone, qui avait rejoint son frère à Paris pendant une année en 1932 à seize ans et joué au hockey au Palais des Sports, l'a rejoint dans cette institution. Amo a entraîné Michigan State pendant 28 ans et été élu meilleur entraîneur de NCAA en 1966 en conduisant son équipe au titre.
Décédé dans la maison de sa fille en Californie.
