Born in Ribinska (Rybinsk in English). Tall player.
Was not only an ice hockey player, but also represented Latvia 21 times in football (as a goalkeeper), winning the national title in both sports.
Bebris was forced to join the Soviet-army during WW II, fighting against the Germans.
In the summer of 1942 he was fighting in a group of 30 Soviets and 5 Latvians, who were captured by the Germans. All Soviet-soldiers were shot, but Bebris and his friend Alfons Berzins (World Champion speedskater in 1939) were kept alive only because they presented themselves as sportsmen. In 1943 they were forced into nazi-service, fighting against the Soviets.
After WW II he played professional football both in Germany (Augsburg) and France (RC Strasbourg). In the 1950s he moved to USA and trained both football and ice hockey in Rochester.
Was known as John Bebris in the USA.

Il n'était pas seulement hockeyeur, mais compte 21 sélections avec la Lettonie en football (en tant que gardien), remportant le championnat national dans chaque sport.
Bebris fut forcé de rejoindre l'armée soviétique durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, se battant contre les Allemands.
Durant l'été 1942 il combattait dans un bataillon de 30 Soviétiques et 5 Lettons, qui fut capturé par les Allemands. Tous les soldats soviétiques furent tués, mais Bebris et son ami Alfons Berzins (champion du monde de patinage de vitesse en 1939) eurent la vie sauve car ils se présentèrent eux-mêmes comme sportifs. En 1943 ils furent contraints à intégrer les services nazis, combattant les Soviétiques.
Après la guerre il devint footballeur professionnel en Allemagne (Augsbourg) et en France (RC Strasbourg). Dans les années 1950 il déménagea aux États-Unis pour entraîner en football et hockey sur glace à Rochester.
Il était connu sous le nom de John Bebris aux USA.
