Of Italian and Scottish heritage. His grandfather (Salvatore) Sam „Teets“ Battaglia was a high ranking Chicago mobster for four decades and a personal friend of Al Capone, being in his gang (Chicago Outfit). He was a suspect in seven murders and was arrested 25 times, including burglary, robbery and murder.
Bates himself developed into an experienced and smart forward with good hands, work ethic and sound defensive play.
Could be used at any forward position. Had a reputation of being a drinker and party guy, which hurt his further NHL career.
In 2013 he won one million dollars on the Amazing Race series together with his brother Anthony.

Il fut suspecté de sept meurtres and et arrêté 25 fois, pour cambriolage, vol ou assassinat.
Bates a quant à lui développé les capacités d'attaquant expérimenté et intelligent, avec de bonnes mains, une éthique de travail et un jeu orienté défensif.
Il pouvait être utilisé dans n'importe quelle position d'attaque. Il avait la réputation d'être un fêtard s'adonnant à la boisson, ce qui a fait mal à sa carrière dans la NHL.
En 2013 il remporta un million de dollars dans l'émission de téléréalité de course autour du monde the Amazing Race avec son frère Anthony.
