Born in Slatina, in southern Romania and grew up in nearby Pitești.
There as a junior he played football for FC Argeș Pitești, until moving to Bucharest with his family in 1924. He in fact was an excellent football player, winning the Romanian league five times. As a midfielder he represented Romania three times and participated in the 1938 World Cup (together with future ice hockey teammate Robert Sadowski).
In Bucharest he played football for Venus Bucureşti (1924-27, 1932-40, 1941-45), Juventus Bucureşti (1927-32) and Sportul Studentesc Bucureşti (1940/41).
Played a total of 137 league games (8 goals).
In Venus Bucuresti he played alongside Alfred Eisenbeiser who represented Romania in ice hockey 1932 at the European Championships. Also formed on a dangerous line together with Paul Anastasiu and Constantin Tico, dubbed “Trei Muschetari” (The Three Musketeers).
In 1951 Barbulescu briefly coached the football team of Cluj and in 1952 coached the Romanian national football team at the Summer Olympics in Helsinki.

Né à Slatina, dans le sud de la Roumanie, il a grandi à proximité de Pitești.
Il joua au football en junior pour le FC Argeș Pitești, avant de déménager à Bucarest avec sa famille en 1924. Il fut en fait un excellent footballeur, cinq fois champion de Roumanie. Milieu de terrain, il compta trois sélections avec la Roumanie et participa à la Coupe du Monde 1938 (avec celui qui deviendra son coéquipier au hockey, Robert Sadowski).
À Bucarest il joua au football pour le Venus Bucureşti (1924-27, 1932-40, 1941-45), la Juventus Bucureşti (1927-32) et le Sportul Studentesc Bucharest (1940/41).
Il a joué 137 matchs de championnat (8 buts).
Au Venus Bucuresti il joua aux côtés d'Alfred Eisenbeiser qui a representé la Roumanie au hockey sur glace lors des championnats d'Europe 1932. Il a également formé une ligne dangereuse avec Paul Anastasiu et Constantin Tico, surnommée “Trei Muschetari” (Les trois mousquetaires).
En 1951 Barbulescu fut brièvement entraîneur du club de football de Cluj, et en 1952 il fut sélectionneur national de l'équipe de football de Roumanie lors des Jeux Olympiques d'été d'Helsinki.
