Born in Frederiksberg in Copenhagen. His family roots could be traced back to Dorste in Niedersachsen, Germany. Another line has been traced back to the great crusader Conrad Ditlev Dehn (1688-1753). Leif Ammentorps mother was born in Lovisa, Finland. His greatgrandmother was born in St. Thomas, Virgin Island (colonized by Denmark).
His father Verner was a golf enthusiast who was the co-founder of the first ever Danish Golf magazine and served as its first editor. His father was also was the brain behind the Rungsted Golf Klub, later getting the first hole-in-one on its course. His older brother Stig died in 1944, only 19 years old. Leif himself went on to work as a businessman in New York.
President and owner of Anker Marine Paints (Capla Corporation). Also worked for Jmm Wetland Consulting. In retirement he lived in Wesport, Connecticut.

Né à Frederiksberg, commune devenue un quartier de Copenhague, il descend d'une longue lignée. On lui connaît des ancêtres en Allemagne, en Basse-Saxe plus précisément, et il compterait parmi ses aïeux le croisé Conrad Ditlev Dehn (1688-1753). Sa grand-mère maternelle était née en Finlande, à Lovisa, et son arrière-grand-mère dans les Îles Vierges américaines qui, avant 1917, faisaient partie des Indes occidentales danoises.
Verner Ammentorp, le père de Leif, était un fou de golf. Fondateur et premier rédacteur en chef du Danish Golf Magazine, on doit aussi à Verner la paternité - partagée - du Rungsted Golf Klub, dont il inscrit le tout premier trou-en-un.
Stig, le frère aîné d'Ammentorp, connut en revanche un destin tragique et mourut à 19 ans. Leif quitta le pays très jeune pour s'installer à New York et y faire commerce.
PDG et propriétaire d'Anker Marine Paints, Ammentorp travailla également pour JMM Wetland Consulting. Il passa ses vieux jours dans le Connecticut, sur la côte est des États-Unis.
