Allround defenseman who didn’t have any major weaknesses in his game. Solid and unspectacular. Good understanding of the game.
Drafted in the NHL by Vancouver Canucks in 1988. Had an offer from Vancouver Canucks after the 1993 World Championships, but declined as he wanted to play one more year in Sweden.
Scored 326 (117+209) career points in 959 games.
Retired in 2007. Became a hockey manager and coach.

Défenseur complet, solide et sans fantaisie, mais sans défaut majeur non plus. Bonne compréhension du jeu.
Drafté en 1988 par les Canucks de Vancouver en 1988 qui lui offrirent un contrat après les Mondiaux 1993. Proposition déclinée car Åkerström voulait rester un an de plus en Suède.
Il y passa finalement toute sa carrière, une année en Italie exceptée (Bolzano). A inscrit 326 points (117+209) pour 959 matches disputés.
Après sa retraite en 2007, devenu cadre technique du Luleå HF, "son" club.
