His parents emigrated from Yugoslavia to Schumacher, ON, where Johnny Kovich was born. He learned to skate as soon as he was old enough to walk.
Hard-working player with great work ethic. In the 1950s he went on to play professional hockey in Toledo (IHL), scoring at a point-per-game pace. Retired in 1956.
He worked at Stelco for over 40 years and enjoyed a long retirement of over 40 years until his passing on April 10, 2014.

Fils d'émigrés yougoslaves au Canada, installés dans la province d'Ontario et la ville de Schumacher, plus précisément, où le petit John Kovich vit le jour. Et comme tout petit Canadien, il apprit à patiner avant même de marcher.
Joueur sérieux et travailleur, il connut une petite expérience de hockeyeur pro dans les années 1950 avec les Toledo Mercurys en IHL. Il y inscrira un point par match.
Quitte le hockey en 1956. Employé de l'aciérie Stelco pendant plus de quarante ans en tout (il avait commencé très jeune), il partira à la retraite avant même la cinquantaine et s'éteindra à 86 ans.
