Younger brother of Jakub Kovář. Quick hands and good hockey sense. Primarily good down low and dangerous around the goal. Not a very fast skater.
Very successful in the KHL as a point per game player and went over to North America in 2018. Signed a one year contract with the NY Islanders who never gave him a chance. Left the NY Islanders and signed with the Providence Bruins in the AHL. Disappointed, he eventually came back to Czech Republic midseason.

Jeune frère du gardien international Jakub Kovář, Jan est un centre aux mains habiles et au sens du jeu développé. Très bon quand il a l'horizon dégagé, opportuniste dans l'enclave malgré un patinage moyen.
Devenu une figure tutélaire de Magnitka en KHL avec une moyenne d'un point par match pendant cinq saisons, il a tenté sa chance en Amérique du Nord lors de l'été 2018. Les Islanders lui firent signer un contrat d'un an sans jamais lui donner sa chance. Il fit donc un détour par les Providence Bruins en AHL avant, déçu, de revenir en République tchèque à la mi-saison.
