Was a good overall athlete growing up and even represented Czechoslovakia in handball as a junior. Had the ideal size for a center in his days. Was a pretty much complete player who could both score and set up plays equally well. Had irrational moves, was fast and strong, a very difficult player to contain for any defenseman. Formed a dangerous duo with Jan Havel.
Represented Czechoslovakia 148 times (56 goals). Went on to finish his playing career in West Germany, there he formed a dangerous line together with Erich Kühnhackl and Helmut Steiger. When the Germans wanted to sign him for another year, the Czechoslovakian government said no, so Kochta stayed in West Germany and thus was seen as a defector. As a result, the governement confiscated his house and all other belongings. He also received an 18 month-ban from the IIHF.
Became an ice hockey coach, first in Italy and then for nine different German clubs and one Swiss. His daughter was a world class tennis player, at one time ranked n°45 in the world. His son-in-law is Jiří Vaněk, once ranked n°74 in the world as a tennis player, who coached Karolína Plíšková and Petra Kvitová.
Jiří Kochta is inducted in the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.

Athlète complet qui, durant sa jeunesse, fut même international tchécoslovaque junior en handball. Taille idéale pour un centre à son époque (1,83m). Imprévisible, costaud et rapide, il en donnait pour leur peine aux défenseurs adverses.
Attaquant complet, il se signala d'abord par sa combativité et son sens du sacrifice. Capable de mener le palet en zone offensive, il montra peu à peu sa capacité pour passer ou marquer lui-même. Formait un duo avec Jan Havel au Sparta Prague.
148 sélections internationales (56 buts) puis il partit "à l'ouest", en RFA, à Landshut en l'occurrence, une fois atteints ses 33 ans. Aligné avec Erich Kühnhackl et Helmut Steiger, il fit des ravages en championnat d'Allemagne. Arrivé au bout de ses contrats allemands (Landshut et Munich), son gouvernement lui ordonna de rentrer. Refusant d'obtempérer, il devint défecteur et le gouvernement tchécoslovaque se saisit de tous ses biens restés au pays, maison comprise. L'IIHF le suspendit aussi pendant 18 mois pour transfert non autorisé.
Devenu entraîneur en Italie puis en Allemagne et en Suisse, où il occupera de nombreux bancs avec plus ou moins de succès.
Père de Marketa Kochta, joueuses de tennis un temps classée 45e à la WTA. Beau-père de Jiří Vaněk, également tennisman pro (74e mondial) devenu entraîneur réputé, notamment de Karolína Plíšková et Petra Kvitová. Un fils de Marketa joue au football, l'autre (Tom Nicolas) joue au hockey sur glace pour le Sparta.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey tchèque.
