His grandmother was born in Hungary (Tata) and his grandfather in the Ukraine (Lwów). His Vienna born father Marcell [1876-1942] worked in Prague for a while where Herbert Klang’s older brother Arthur [1906-1951] was born in 1906.
Herbert Klang was a very good skater who used that skill to his greatest advantage. Made his first appearance on the national team on January 16, 1927 against the Austrian B team. Played as a winger and also played as a defenseman. After the 1928 Olympics he received a 10 month suspension against all international opposition. He, Walter Sell and Hermann Weiss had all "disgraced" and "tarnished" the Austrian reputation. Lack of discipline was the reason.
He was forbidden to play against international teams, but was pardoned on December 14, 1928. He also played club hockey in Switzerland (EHC Saint-Moritz), Holland (IJHC Blue Six Amsterdam) and Poland (DTSG Krakau). Represented Austria 10 times.

C'est un enfant de l'empire austro-hongrois puisqu'une de ses grands-mères est de Tata, en Hongrie, et un de ses grands-pères de Lvov, en Ukraine. Son père Marcell (1876-1942) est en revanche né à Vienne mais a longtemps travaillé à Prague où le frère aîné d'Herbert, Arthur, vit le jour en 1906 (il mourut à 45 ans). La famille Klang était revenue à Vienne pour la naissance de Herbert.
Ce dernier était un patineur émérite qui savait faire usage de cette qualité dans le jeu. Première apparition avec l'équipe d'Autriche en janvier 1927 pour une opposition interne contre l'Autriche "B". Ailier ou parfois défenseur, il fut sélectionné pour les JO d'hiver 1928 à la suite desquels il fut suspendu dix mois de l'équipe nationale, en compagnie de Walter Sell et Hermann Weiss, pour avoir "sali" la réputation de son pays. Apparemment, le trio avait fait preuve d'un "manque de discipline" (Vanek, Grabner et Raffl n'ont rien inventé).
Sa suspension fut malgré tout levée avant la fin de l'année 1928. Ceci dit, Klang ne compta que 10 capes. Joua aussi en Suisse (Saint-Moritz), aux Pays-Bas (IJHC Blue Six Amsterdam) et en Pologne (DTSG Cracovie).
