Günther Kelch

Kelch, Günther ("Timmy", "Tünny")

Position : C

xx-xx-1917 Berlin, GER
31-07-1943 Gachina, URS (RUS)

He and his older brother "Hanneman" Kelch both played ice hockey for Brandenburg Berlin and Zehlendorfer Wespen. Represented Germany 7 times (1 goal).
Was a Captain in WW II and a pilot (JG 26) credited with 13 (some say 17) victories in only 4 months from February 1943 to June 1943. He was awarded the Ehrenpokal der Luftwaffe (Honor Goblet of the Luftwaffe), a Luftwaffe award established in 1940 by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, the Reich Minister of Aviation and Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe. It was officially known as the Ehrenpokal "für besondere Leistung im Luftkrieg", or Honor Goblet "For Special Achievement in the Air War". He narrowly escaped death on May 30, 1943, when his pilot buddy was shot down. Eventually died two months later in Gatchina, near Leningrad (St.Petersburg) when a 21 cm rocket exploded in it’s under-wing launcher (tube), setting his AC on fire. He was unable to escape the burning aircraft.
His older brother wrote proudly in the obituary that "Timmy gave his life for his country". Later during the war his brother was also killed.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
