His father who hailed from the Silesian part of Germany worked as both an ice hockey and field hockey coach. His father also gave him his nickname "Ferdl" when he was a kid. At the age of 17 he won a regular spot on the SC Turbine Erfurt team, and soon played for the East German national team, both as a junior and senior. Represented East Germany 61 times. Popular player who was known for his fighting spirit and commitment to the game.
After having retired in the mid 1970s, he went on to coach speedskaters.

Issu d'une famille provenant de la Silésie allemande du côté paternel, il est le fils d'un entraîneur de hockey sur glace et sur gazon. C'est naturellement que "Ferdl", un surnom donné par son père, se saisit très tôt d'une crosse. Dès ses 17 ans, il s'installe comme titulaire au SC Turbine Erfurt puis devient international est-allemand, d'abord en junior et ensuite avec la sélection principale de RDA.
Collectera 61 capes au total. Apprécié du public local pour ses qualités de combattant et son engagement dans le jeu, il prendra sa retraite la trentaine à peine passée et deviendra entraîneur de patinage de vitesse.
