Nephew of former German national team goaltender Helmut de Raaf, and brother of Isabel Oliver, who used to play for the German women's national team. He began to play ice hockey at the age of six at Neusser EC and was there until the age of nine. Then switched to EV Füssen until the age of fifteen. Played high-school hockey in Minnesota. Played college hockey in North America for Harvard University and was elected ECAC best goaltender in 2001.
Grew up idolizing Dominik Hasek. Later played in the DEL until his retirement because of work commitments. Won one German league title with Eisbären Berlin in 2005. Represented Germany 41 times. Announced his retirement on January 27, 2009. Became a doctor in biophysics.

Neveu d'Helmut de Raaf et frère de l'ancienne internationale allemande Isabel Onken.
Il débute le hockey à six ans au Neusser EC puis rejoint Füssen trois ans plus tard, club où il restera jusqu'à ses quinze ans.
Part très vite étudier aux États-Unis, d'abord dans un lycée du Minnesota, puis à l'université de Harvard, avec laquelle il est élu meilleur gardien d'ECAC en 2001.
Fan de Dominik Hasek. Champion d'Allemagne 2005 avec les Eisbären.
Après 41 sélections en équipe d'Allemagne, il annonce sa retraite internationale en septembre 2007 pendant que son épouse attend leur troisième enfant.
En janvier 2009, il annonce l'arrêt de sa carrière tout court en fin de saison, à seulement 29 ans, après deux dernières saisons à Wolfsburg.
Docteur en biophysique, ayant soutenu sa thèse sur la dynamique de l'adhésion cellulaire.
