Younger brother of Mark Johnson. Played for his father "Badger Bob" at Wisconsin and was a member of the 1981 NCAA Championship team and captained the 1981/82 team.
Majored in physical education. Noted as a player with a good shot. Retired in 1983. Scouted in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs for 9 years. Served as an Assistant Coach for Wisconsin, Bowling Green and Cornell. Hockey instructor at the Bob Johnson Hockey School.

Frère cadet de Mark Johnson et fils du légendaire "Badger Bob" Johnson, longtemps entraîneur des sélections américaines nationales et olympiques, et vainqueur de la Stanley en 1991 avec Pittsburgh. C'est justement avec son père derrière la balustrade que Pete remporta le championnat NCAA 1981 avec l'Université du Wisconsin, équipe dont il fut capitaine la saison suivante.
Diplômé en éducation physique, réputé pour son tir puissant, il ne joua pas très longtemps, jusqu'à ses 24 ans pour être précis. Après avoir été durant neuf ans un scout pour les Maple Leafs, il fut aussi entraîneur-adjoint des Universités du Wisconsin, de Bowling Green et de Cornell, ainsi qu'éducateur à la "Bob Johnson Hockey School".
