Born in the Břevnov area of Prague. Fast player with a very good shot. Great stickhandler with good technique. Very calm player under pressure. Known for bending down low over his stick when attacking.
He was a telegraphist in WW I and was captured by Russians on August 30, 1915 in Halic (Poland). He was a prisoner of war for five years (until June 18, 1920) in a Russian labor camp (1915-20) and didn’t return back home until autumn 1920. Despite a seven year layoff he went on to play great hockey. During a game on January 15, 1921 he scored all 10 goals when his club beat Brünner EV 10-1.
Captained Bohemia and later Czechoslovakia. Represented Bohemia/Czech Republic 40 times (41 goals, officially 35 or 36). Worked briefly as a playing coach in Bratislava, Slovakia in the mid 1920s.
Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.
According to the Hall of Fame he was born on September 8, 1891.

Né à Prague dans le quartier de Břevnov à l'époque où le pays s'appelait encore Bohème (région de l'empire austro-hongrois), cet attaquant avait un très bon tir, une technique de pointe et un maniement exemplaire de sa crosse. De caractère égal, il avait la particularité de se pencher très bas sur son bâton quand il se lançait dans des raids offensifs.
Puis la guerre éclata l'année de ses 23 ans. Télégraphiste pour la Triplice, il fut capturé le 30 août 1915 par les Russes dans la région de Galicie en Pologne et resta leur prisonnier de guerre jusqu'au 18 juin 1920. Ne regagna ses terres qu'à l'automne suivant, dans ce nouveau pays qu'était la Tchécoslovaquie, créé par les accords du Trianon. Malgré ces sept ans de douloureux hiatus, Jirkovský reprit le hockey. Et avec style ! Le 15 janvier 1921, il marqua les 10 buts de la victoire 10-1 du Slavia contre le Brünner EV.
Plusieurs fois capitaine des sélections de Bohème d'abord, puis de Tchécoslovaquie ensuite, il compta en tout 40 sélections internationales pour 41 buts, même si les registres officiels indiquent 35 ou 36. Sera aussi brièvement entraîneur dans les années 20 à Bratislava.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey tchèque qui situe sa date de naissance au 8 septembre 1891.
