Birger Jansen

Jansen, Birger ("Bigga")

Position : D

07-01-1948 Bærum, NOR
07-11-2016 Bærum, NOR

Grew up in a rocky home where his father was absent for most of the time. In later years Jansen credited his hockey teammate Per "Peddal" Dahl for being his reserve dad, and the one who made him stay out of trouble, shaping him to what he later became. Solid but unspectacular defenseman who played the majority of his career for Jar IL.
He finished playing for SK Frisk where he arrived before the 1977/78 season and played there for several seasons. Finished his playing career in Jar (Division 2) during the early 1980s as the playing coach and captain. Played around 150 games for the Norwegian national team.
Was always an enthusiastic yachter since childhood and continued sailing in the summers with very good results, becoming a world class competitor. He was the Norwegian champion in the two-man category six times between 1972 and 2003. He also won six silver medals and seven bronze medals. Won a total of 138 sailing medals (a record in Norway) during a 45-year span. His greatest accomplishment in that sport though was when he won the Snipe World Master in Rio de Janeiro 2010.
Not to be confused with Birger Jensen, famous Danish football goalkeeper.
Passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.
