Ihnačák, Peter

Position : C

03-05-1957 Poprad, TCH (SVK)

Youth team / club formateur : HK Poprad

Father of Brian Ihnačák. Strong player on the puck with good hands and a fast shot.
Had nine siblings (four brothers and five sisters). His grandfather emigrated to USA in the 1930s.
Other family members (his older brother and sisters) had emigrated to USA in the 1970s and this made him a “high risk” player for defection according to the regime.
Did not get permission to participate in the 1980 Olympics.
In 1982 the regime didn’t want to let him play in the 1982 World Championships in Finland, but head coach Luděk Bukač insisted on it.
Peter actually defected during this tournament: he phoned his brother Jan in New York to join him in Helsinki and they took a boat to Stockholm withouth being controlled.
Another brother - Miroslav - joined Peter three years later and played alongside him in the NHL.
The Ihnačák brothers were the first pair of European brothers, and the first pair of non-twin European brothers, drafted into NHL in the same year.
Set a Toronto Maple Leafs rookie record in 1982/83 with 66 points.
Represented Czechoslovakia 24 times (8 goals). Retired in 1997. Became a coach and an NHL-scout.
Godfather of Natalie Babony, who played for the Slovakian womens national team.
NHL totals: 417-102-165-267
