Willie Huber

Huber, Wilhelm Heinrich

Position : D

15-01-1958 Strasskirchen, GER
28-06-2010 Hamilton, ON, CAN

Born in Germany, but came to Hamilton with his family when he was 10 months old.
Put on skates for the first time at the age of ten.
When he joined the NHL he was one of the tallest players in league history, being 6-5 (196cm) and weighing 225 lbs (102kg).
Despite his size he was a surprisingly smooth skater on the contrary of what many fans said in later years.
He also had good hands, which enabled him to put up decent offensive numbers.
Often used on the powerplays due to a booming shot.
His biggest drawback was that he wasn’t as physical as the coaches wanted him to be, given his size they wanted him to be more of a physical presence.
Lost much of his excellent mobility following torn ligaments in both knees.
Played his last game in 1988 and eventually retired in 1989.
He then worked at Copps Coliseum, Hamilton Place, and the Hamilton Convention Centre, in facility and event operations.
Died of a heart attack in his home.
NHL totals: 655-104-217-321
