His father was from Massachusetts and his mother from Canada.
Had two younger sisters. Played high school hockey for Melrose Monarchs and later played college hockey for Dartmouth.
Became a very successful ice hockey coach at the College level (best NCAA coach in 1969, 1974 and 1979). Once called the most innovative coach in the country.
Known to always coach in a long black coat and a black fedora. Very popular among the players for his calm demeanor and wiseness.
Died of cancer at his home in Durham, NH, two days after having returned from hospital.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

A joué du hockey universitaire pour les Monarchs de Melrose et a ensuite joué pour Dartmouth.
Meilleur entraîneur universitaire 1969, 1974 et 1979, un temps appelé l’entraîneur le plus innovant du pays. Connu pour toujours porter, quand il entraînait, un long manteau noir et un feutre noir. Très apprécié par les joueurs pour son attitude calme et sa sagesse.
Il mourut d’un cancer chez lui à Durham au New Hampshire, deux jours après être rentré de l’hôpital.
Intronisé au Temple de la renommée du hockey états-unien.
