His parents moved to Weißwasser in 1938 and he was born one year later there. Known to have played with a black face mask. Represented East Germany 118 times.
After the 1970 World Championships he was told that he was too old and not longer needed on the national team. Coached the East German national team between 1971-76.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ses parents s'installèrent à Weißwasser en 1938, soit un an avant sa naissance, ce qui a sans doute dicté son destin de hockeyeur, le ville étant l'autre centre (avec Berlin-Est) du hockey est-allemand. Jouait avec un masque couvrant tout noir. 118 sélections avec l'Allemagne de l'Est.
Après les Mondiaux 1970, alors qu'il n'était même pas âgé de 31 ans, on lui fit aimablement comprendre qu'il était trop vieux pour l'équipe nationale. Pas rancunier, il est devenu entraîneur de la sélection entre 71 et 76.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
