Born in Freiburg, West Germany where his Canadian father played professional hockey. Dual Canadian-German citizen as his mother is from Berlin.
While growing up in Calgary he rooted for the Flames and Brett Hull was his favorite player.
Great shot with a quick release. Also able to set up his linemates.
Good size to compete in high-traffic areas. Effective player in the slot area.
Equally effective on either side of center. Not much of a skater and sometimes caught out of position.
In later years he lost his killer instinct and became too slow for the NHL.
Two-time MVP and best forward at the World Championships (2004 and 2008). Three time World Championships All-Star (2003, 2004 and 2008).
He was voted into the NHL All-Star Game five times, and played in four of them.
On September 29, 2003, he was seriously injured after he lost control of the Ferrari 360 Modena he was driving. Heatley suffered a broken jaw, a minor concussion, a bruised lung and a bruised kidney, and he tore three ligaments in his right knee. His passenger, NHL-teammate Dan Snyder was critically injured, with a skull fracture, and died six days later.
Heatley was charged with vehicular homicide; he pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide. He admitted to drinking prior to the incident, but his blood-alcohol content was below the legal limit. He was sentenced to three years probation. Heatley avoided having to go to trial as part of a plea deal that dropped the first-degree charge of vehicular homicide.

Né à Fribourg-en-Brisgau quand son père Murray était hockeyeur en Allemagne. Double nationalité allemande et canadienne car sa mère est berlinoise.
Il a grandi à Calgary, les Flames étaient son équipe préférée et Brett Hull son joueur favori.
Excellent tir avec un déclenchement rapide. Il est également capable de servir ses partenaires.
Bon gabarit pour se faire une place dans le trafic. Efficace dans l'enclave.
Aussi efficace sur chaque aile. Le patinage n'est pas son point fort et il est parfois pris hors de position.
Après avoir dépassé la trentaine, il a perdu son instinct de tueur et est devenu trop lent pour la NHL.
Deux fois meilleur joueur et meilleur attaquant des Mondiaux (2004 et 2008), élu trois fois dans l'équipe-type des journalistes (2003, 2004 et 2008).
Il a été sélectionné cinq fois pour le All-Star Game de NHL, et y a participé à quatre reprises.
Le 29 septembre 2003, il a été gravement blessé après avoir perdu le contrôle de la Ferrari 360 Modena qu'il conduisait. Heatley a eu la mâchoire cassée, une commotion mineure, des contusions aux poumois et aux reins, et trois ligaments déchirés dans son genou gauche. Son passager, son coéquipier de NHL Dan Snyder, était dans un état critique avec une fracture du crâne et est mort six jours plus tard.
Heatley a été accusé d'homicide involontaire et a plaidé coupable. Il a admis avoir bu avant l'accident même si son taux d'alcoolémie était sous la limite légale. Heatley a évité le procès par un accord judiciaire et a été condamné à trois années de probation.
791 points (372+419) en 869 parties de saison régulière de NHL. Retraité en 2016.
