Karel Hartmann

Hartmann, Karel ("Maca")

Position : R/D/LW

06-07-1885 Trhové Dušníky, BOH (AUT-HUN)
xx-10-1944 Auschwitz, POL (GER)

Youth team / club formateur : HC Příbram.

Was of Jewish origin, although he never practiced the faith.
Born in the small village of Trhové Dušníky just outside of Příbram, where he began playing hockey.
Very fast and elusive skater in his younger days. His patented move was faking a move to one side and then go to the other. Considerably slower in later years but compensated the loss of his quickness with a well developed tactical sense.
Played his club hockey for the Prague based club Česká Sportovní Společnost until it folded (He captained the team). He then played the rest of his club career for Sparta Praha.
Represented Bohemia / Czechoslovakia 13 times (2 goals).
He worked as a sports journalist for many years but was an attorney by trade.
Served as the Vice-President of the Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG) in 1922/23. Was an international hockey referee.
When the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia all of his old friends turned their back to him, in fear for their own life. On July 23, 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt and then on October 16, 1944 he was deported further to Auschwitz where he was killed. The exact date of his death is unknown, but it is probable that he was killed the same day or the day after the deportation. His wife also died in a concentration camp, while one of his sons (George) survived and eventually settled down in the USA.
