Complete player who dominated at times while playing in Europe. An exceptional skater who was always appreciated by the crowd.
Born in North Plains, Michigan, but moved with his family to Brantford, Ontario as a young boy.
Studied dentistry at Toronto University and University of Chicago. As a top student he was given the opportunity to further improve in the profession in Europe. He left USA for Europe on April 4, 1906.
As it turned out he became an extremely popular figure during his years in Germany. Was the assistant surgeon dentist for the German royal court and later became one of the pioneers and leading experts on the use of porcelain caps instead of gold crowns.
Moved back to California in 1917 and became the personal dentist for several Hollywood movie stars of that time, including Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Oliver Hardy, Jimmy Stewart and Fred Astaire to name a few.
Also the driving force behind hockey in California during the 1920’s and 30’s. President of the Amateur Ice Hockey Association of Southern California and also coached University of Southern California.
Had a serious car accident in 1945, sustaining a serious head injury that left him speech impaired and partly paralyzed on his right side.
Regarded as the “father” of modern ice hockey in Germany. Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il est né à North Plains, dans le Michigan, mais sa famille a déménagé à Brantford, en Ontario, quand il était encore un petit garçon.
Il a étudié la médecine dentaire aux universités de Toronto et de Chicago. Comme il était un des meilleurs étudiants, on lui a donné l'opportunité de s'améliorer encore professionnellement en Europe. Il a quitté les États-Unis le 4 avril 1906.
Il s'est révélé être une figure extrêmement populaire durant ses années en Allemagne. Il était le chirurgien dentiste assistant de la cour impériale allemande et est ensuite devenu un des pionniers de l'utilisation de couronnes en porcelaines et non plus en or.
Il est rentré en Californie en 1917 et est devenu le dentiste personnel de plusieurs stars de cinéma de Hollywood, dont Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Oliver Hardy, Jimmy Stewart et Fred Astaire.
Il a aussi été la force motrice du hockey en Californie. Président de l'association de hockey sur glace amateur de Californie du sud quand un "Palais de Glace" (baptisé ainsi en français) a ouvert à Los Angeles début 1925, il a aussi entraîné l'Université de Californie du Sud (USC).
Un grave accident de voiture en 1945 l'a blessé au visage et lui a occasionné des troubles d'élocution et une paralysie partielle du côté droit.
Considéré comme le "père" du hockey moderne en Allemagne et introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
