Began playing football and bandy hockey (played with a ball). Fairly big player of his time (6'0", 183cm). Strong player in the slot where he scored the majority of his goals. Powerful and speedy player. Had a lightning quick release of his shot.
Often formed a line with Nikolay Khlystov and Mikhail Bychkov. Top league scorer in 1949, 1953, 1955, 1957 and 1958.
Played 300 league games, scoring 372 goals, a Soviet record at that time. Represented Soviet Union 92 times (72 goals).
Retired in 1961. Later served as an international referee. He received numerous medals for his efforts during WW II.
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.

Comme nombre des premiers internationaux soviétiques, ce centre massif, rapide et puissant (1,83m, belle taille pour l'époque), fut "volé" au foot et au bandy. Autoritaire dans le slot, zone depuis laquelle il inscrivait la majorité de ses buts. Faisait partir son lancer en un clin d'oeil.
Souvent aligné avec Nikolai Khlystov et Mikhail Bychkov en équipe d'URSS. Quintuple meilleur buteur du championnat soviétique en 1949, 1953, 1955, 1957 et 1958.
372 buts en 300 matches de championnat environ, ce qui fut longtemps un record soviétique. 92 sélections nationales, 72 buts.
Ce héros soviétique de la "grande guerre patriotique" (la Seconde guerre mondiale), multidécoré, prit sa retraite à 36 ans et devint arbitre international.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey russe.
