Both his parents hailed from Massachusetts. His grandfather from his fathers side was born in England and his other grandparents from both sides were Canadian born. He was seen as a consistent defenseman.
Grocott graduated from Melrose High School where he was captain of the football and hockey teams. He was an outstanding defenseman for Dartmouth College between 1949 and 1952. Captained Dartmouth in his final year when he was a national all-star. He joined the Marine Corps and served in Korea from 1952 to 1954, then joined the All-American Hockey team, playing in the 1955 WC tournament.
He worked many years for Merrill Lynch. In 1969 he was named assistant manager of the newly opened Honolulu branch, and stayed in the islands until returning to New England in 1985, settling in New Hampshire. He passed away after a lengthy illness at the Concord Regional VNA Hospice House.

Si ses deux parents sont natifs du Massachusetts, son grand-père paternel était anglais et ses trois autres grands-parents, nés au Canada.
Défenseur fiable, Grocott était un diplômé de la Melrose High School dont il prit le capitanat des équipes de football américain et de hockey. Intégra ensuite le Dartmouth College dont il garda la ligne bleue avec brio entre 1949 et 1952. On lui confia même le capitanat lors de sa dernière année, où il fut élu dans l'équipe-étoile universitaire nationale.
Se fit ensuite Marine et fut déployé sur le front de Corée entre 1952 et 1954. À son retour, il intégra la sélection des États-Unis qui joua le Mondial 1955.
Longtemps employé chez Merrill Lynch, Grocott fut envoyé en 1969 travailler pour leur agence d'Honolulu en tant que directeur adjoint, et il resta là-bas jusqu'en 1985, année où il revint sur la côte Est, dans l'État du New Hampshire. Mort à 82 ans d'une longue maladie.
