His grandfather moved from Poland to Nitra in Slovakia. Jozef was born in Bratislava and grew up in the Ružinov part of the town. His mother was a figure skating coach and he quickly learned to skate well.
He was discovered by Viliam Cech. He began playing for Sokol NV Bratislava and made the senior team in 1955.
First Czechoslovak captain chosen by a player vote. The Slovak forward was almost unanimously chosen by his - mainly Czech - teammates.
Exceptional goalscorer who managed to score 298 goals in 332 Czechoslovak league games.
Between 1969 and 1972 he played for SC Riessersee in West Germany (88 points in 78 games). Bundesliga MVP in 1969 and 1972.
Worked seven hours a day for Marker company while he was playing in Germany as he was an amateur.
Scored 82 goals in 134 games for Czechoslovakia. He eventually retired in 1975.
Went on to work as an ice hockey coach. German champion in 1978 with Riessersee and in 1984 with Cologne.
Coached the Czechoslovak national junior team in 1980 and 1981.
Inducted into the Slovakian, Czech and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Son grand-père a quitté la Pologne pour Nitra en Slovaquie. Jozef est né à Bratislava et à grandi dans le quartier de Ružinov. Sa mère était entraîneuse de patinage artistique et il a rapidement appris à bien patiner.
Découvert par Viliam Cech, il a commencé à jouer avec le Sokol NV Bratislava et intègre l’équipe première en 1955.
Il fut aussi un des meilleurs joueurs de tennis du pays jusqu'à l'âge junior.
Il fut le premier capitaine de la Tchécoslovaquie élu par un vote des joueurs. Le Slovaque a été choisi presque unanimement par ses coéquipiers tchèques.
Buteur exceptionnel qui a marqué 298 buts en 332 matchs de championnat tchécoslovaque.
Entre 1969 et 1972, il joue pour le SC Riessersee (56 buts et 32 assists en 78 parties). Meilleur joueur de Bundesliga 1969 et 1972.
Il travaillait sept heures par jour pour l'entreprise Marker durant son séjour allemand puisqu'il était amateur.
82 buts en 134 sélections pour la Tchécoslovaquie. Retraité en 1975.
Belle carrière d'entraîneur, champion d'Allemagne en 1978 avec Riessersee et en 1984 avec Cologne.
Sélectionneur de l'équipe nationale junior de Tchécoslovaquie en 1980 et 1981.
Membre des temples de la renommée du hockey slovaque, tchèque et de l’IIHF.
